In 1998, István transitioned from academia to entrepreneurship, founding Y2KO, a startup that provided an efficient solution to the Y2K problem. He is currently the CEO of 4Test-Plus and the creator and key contributor of Harmony, the only two-phase model-based test automation tool. His groundbreaking work includes developing an intelligent mutation testing framework to enhance testers’ test design skills, as well as co-creating a unique website with Prof. Attila Kovács where testers can practice and improve their test design.
István has made significant contributions to the testing community, serving as an author for the Advanced Test Analyst Working Group and as a member of the Agile Working Group at ISTQB. A sought-after speaker, he has delivered keynotes, invited talks, and presentations at numerous academic and industrial conferences, including ISTC 2024, where he captivated audiences with his insights.
At ISTC 2025, István will lead a full-day tutorial on “Efficient Test Design Automation,” sharing his expertise in action-state testing—a revolutionary, codeless model-based testing technique that promises to transform how testers design and automate tests.
This hands-on session will explore how action-state testing uses simple text-based model steps—starting with actions (inputs) followed by optional responses (outputs) and states—to create concise, maintainable models. Attendees will learn why states are critical for detecting most defects, how to use a textual graph editor without graphical complexity, and why this method is inherently DRY (Don’t Repeat Yourself), fast to implement, and cost-effective to maintain.
Through practical exercises, participants will build a stateless model, extend it with states, automate test cases, and validate their efficiency using István’s intelligent mutation framework. You’ll compare action-state testing’s superior defect detection percentage (DDP) against manual testing, AI, and stateless solutions, uncovering why this technique is a game-changer for modern software quality.
Join us to master a transformative approach that eliminates coding barriers, simplifies maintenance, and maximizes testing impact—perfect for testers eager to design smarter, not harder.

A passionate advocate for personal and professional growth, Mike is a regular speaker at industry conferences and occasionally organizes events to foster knowledge-sharing within the IT community. His insights are shaped by a rich tapestry of real-world experiences, making him a compelling voice in the field of software testing and quality assurance.
At ISTC 2025, Mike will deliver a keynote titled “Stakeholder Management is a Testing Superpower!”, drawing from his journey to explore the critical role of effective stakeholder engagement in elevating the impact and perception of testing.
In turn, Stakeholders need information from testers to make effective business decisions. Testers are in the information provision business; If this information is delivered in time, in the right format, and it helps stakeholder decision making, then testing is often seen as a value-add activity in projects and the broader organisation.
However, achieving good engagement and communication with stakeholders is hard, and often not successfully planned or managed, leading to stakeholder dissatisfaction and testers not being valued, despite the effort expended in delivering testing scope.
Join Mike in this keynote where he will share his journey of identifying and engaging with stakeholders, and how he has learned the hard way, the importance of good planning, communication, and engagement with key stakeholder groups.
Mike will share stories of poor stakeholder engagement and explore the damaging impact that had on the reputation of testing, and what we can all do to increase our value in our organisations.
In this talk Mike will share examples and ideas to bring the following topics to life…
• Why are stakeholders important?
• What is the impact of poor stakeholder engagement?
• What are the problems with perception, and why is there a disconnect from reality?
• What prevents good stakeholder engagement?
• How to undertake stakeholder identification, and how to effectively communicate with them
• Why we should care about different stakeholder groups
• Why it is important to explain benefits of testing over features of testing
• How data can be used to remove subjectivity and opinion
Yet, he also warns of pitfalls: bias in AI models, over-automation stripping human judgment, AI “confabulations,” privacy risks, and poorly crafted prompts. This isn’t just cautionary—Rik highlights where GenAI shines and previews ISTC 2025 talks to guide your conference journey. Attendees will leave with a balanced perspective on leveraging GenAI effectively, ensuring quality remains robust in an AI-driven world.
